Beat the Redundancy Blues in 6 Easy Steps

Speaking with a friend yesterday (let’s call him Ted), we found that they had just been made redundant. Ted, and a number of others colleagues were made redundant, and were then given 15 minutes to collect their belongings and go. Whilst they were given the appropriate payouts, it was still a difficult experience, especially so close to the Christmas and New Years holiday season. Ted had been working for a mining services company, and with the downturn in the Australian resources sector, it was not surprising that his company was downsizing their operations and retrenching staff. Still it sucks. It really sucks. It’s hard not to get angry, not to take it personally, and to worry about the future; it can be hard and scary to work out how to get back on the horse.

What we found with our friend Ted, was that this was really an opportunity in disguise: he had been looking for an opportunity to move out of the resources industry and into a more fulfilling line of work, and this was the push he needed. Interestingly, we have found that many CSR, NFP and sustainability professionals made the move to a more meaningful vocation, after being made redundant – it forced them to find the courage to make a change.

Making this transition can be very difficult, and given the bearish labour market we are currently seeing, more and more professionals are being forced to reconsider their options, their industry and their career path. In the event that you do experience redundancy, here are some tips to help you manage your sanity, reputation and career in the process. Continue reading Beat the Redundancy Blues in 6 Easy Steps

The Silver Linings Playbook: Meet the mum who started the Ice Bucket Challenge

In the wake of today’s sad turn of events in Sydney, we thought it might be good to take some time to be inspired by some of the good things that can come out of a situation. Every cloud has its silver lining – the #illridewithyou movement on twitter has seen Australians rally around the muslim community in the last 24 hours, in a touching gesture of unity and support. This is perhaps a way of trying to make some good come from a terrible situation. Continue reading The Silver Linings Playbook: Meet the mum who started the Ice Bucket Challenge

Why Grill’d Burgers are good for the community

grill'd

Here’s another gourmet fast food joint that is getting involved in community affairs, and has been doing so for quite a while. Grill’d is a burger joint that we all know and love across the country (except for NT & Tasmania sorry!), and their Local Matters program lets customers decide which community groups Grill’d will donate $500 to each month. Using a simple voting system (you get a bottle cap token with every burger purchased), customers can choose from one of three different local organisations each month and pop their token in the jar. The hills are alive, with the sound of backflips

SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED THIS WEEK. So lets start at the very beginning – a very good place to start. Earlier this week, the Federal Government’s energy policy took another hit, this time from Nobel Laureate and former US Energy Secretary to Obama, Dr Steven Chu, who was in town to accept an honourary Doctorate from ANU is an advocate of urgent transition from fossil fuels to nuclear and renewable energy to combat climate change. Six Gifts to greenify your Christmas

New report shows ASX Top 50 are alarmingly ignorant of sustainability risks

Inclusion of economic, social and governance (ESG) risk in corporate governance planning isn’t just about helping to keep a company in the black, or about reducing it’s carbon or social footprint. It’s also about accounting for risks that result from operating in a global business context – and it’s surprising to find that almost half of Australia’s top ASX50 aren’t actively focusing on preparing their businesses for this. Julie Bishop has quietly restarted the nuclear power debate

Perhaps it is the state of the Australian energy industry, or pressure from other international actors, but something has made Foreign Affairs Minister Bishop dust off the old “nuclear Australia” debate and thrust it back into play. What is socially responsible, 315m long, and very, very wet?

slidestreet

What IS socially responsible, 315m long, and very, very wet? How about a giant waterslide set up in the very centre of the Perth CBD for one day, with bars, food stalls, music and entertainment? YES PLEASE! Continue reading What is socially responsible, 315m long, and very, very wet?

Is Perth’s urban sprawl holding WA back?

beatles_pressed_glass
Let us in – a sustainable future awaits!! Please? It’s cold out here…..

Perth isn’t known for its inner-city living – much the opposite in fact. Perth is home to one of the world’s largest  urban sprawls, stretching from Mandurah in the south, up to Yanchep in the north; the entire western corridor of the Perth metropolitan area has been developed so that every man woman and child (and their dog’s cousin) can have a full plot of land with a house, a garage, and room for the kids to run around. It’s the Australian dream, and certainly the one that us West Australians have grown up with as our inheritance.

There is just one problem: It’s not sustainable. Continue reading Is Perth’s urban sprawl holding WA back?
